Leonard tells Carla and Constantin about Wilhelm’s impending death. Carla expresses her sympathy for Wilhelm’s daughter Louise, but when Constantin suggests to inform their “mother” Maria, who has known Wilhelm for many years, about the situation, Carla reacts coldly. Constantin is annoyed that Ansgar treats Maria like a servant and accuses Carla of acting the same way, but Carla tells him that Maria was a grown-up and could take care of herself, that Ansgar had always been able to deceive their mother and that she, Carla, did not intend to compete against Ansgar for their alleged mother’s affection.
In the entrance hall, Carla meets Stella. She is about to tell Stella about Wilhelm’s condition when Lousie, Stella’s cousin Gregor and Eduard arrive at Königsbrunn. Gregor wants to stay by Louise’s side when she goes to see and bid farewell to her father, but Eduard holds him back and Louise tells him that it would be better if he didn’t come with her, so Gregor stays behind in the entrance hall with Carla and Stella. Later, Stella joins Gregor in the kitchen and tries to comfort him as he is devastated because he cannot be there for Louise.
Meanwhile, Wilhelm passes away.

Stella is looking for Carla to inform her about Wilhelm’s death and finds her in the stable where she is taking care of her horse, Mr. Ed. Carla is fighting back tears as she explains to Stella that the horse is likely suffering from a colic and will have to be put down unless it recovers. She is deeply saddened by all the things that seem to happen to her all at once. When Stella tells her about Wilhelm, Carla looks so devastated that Stella takes her hands in an effort to comfort her.
Back at the castle, everyone is mourning the loss of Wilhelm. Carla joins her family in the salon, and Stella informs the staff about what happened and then comforts Gregor, who is still waiting for Louise. Later, David comes to see Stella in her office to inform her about Mr. Ed’s condition. When he tells Stella that Wilhelm’s death reminds him of when his mother died only a few months before, Stella realizes that Carla, who just lost her father Johannes, probably feels the same way and how hard it would be for her to also lose the horse.
The next morning, Stella is looking for Carla and finds her in the salon, all in tears. On impulse, Stella goes to Carla and hugs her, and Carla lets go of her self-control and cries in Stella’s arms.
When Stella returns to the pension later that day, she drops her groceries in the hallway, but instead of picking them up, she has to think of Carla and how Carla cried in her arms. She’s still lost in thought when Charlie and Olli meet her in the hallway. Charlie realizes that something is going on with Stella, who seems distracted and confused, and Stella finally confesses to Charlie that she has fallen in love with Carla.
