As the storyline of Anni & Jasmin on German TV show Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten is attracting a growing crowd of international fans, I put together the answers to a few frequently asked questions as well as other helpful information for new fans:
What is Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten?
Gute Zeiten, schlechte Zeiten, which means “Good Times, Bad Times” and is usually refered to as GZSZ, is a long-running German soap opera set in a neighbourhood in Berlin. It’s on every weeknight at 19:40 Uhr German time (7:40 p.m.).
Who are Anni and Jasmin?
Andrea “Anni” Brehme and Jasmin Flemming are characters on GZSZ who started out as roommates but fell in love and became a couple. They were in a relationship for about a year but broke up in June 2015. As of April 2016, their relationship is complicated, but they are trying to at least stay friends.
The character Jasmin has been on the show since 2008. She is the daughter of Katrin Flemming, who she at first thought to be her sister. Jasmin is a trained seamstress who had once hoped to become an actress. She used to work as a waitress both in the club Mauerwerk and the bar Vereinsheim. She was also hired as a model, but lost that job when she came out and publicly announced that she was in a relationship with another woman. She is currently trying to establish her own fashion label. Jasmin had relationships with various men, including Dominik, her step-brother and later one of her best friends, and Kurt LeRoy, a rock musician. Her relationship with Anni is her first relationship with a woman, though she has kissed her best friend Pia before.
The character Anni was added to the show in the summer of 2013. Anni is a trained audio technician who works at Mauerwerk; she’s also still working as a waitress at Vereinsheim like she did during her training. From the very beginning, Anni has made no secret of the fact that she’s a lesbian. She had flings and one-night stands with various women, including her roommate Pia, but never had a serious relationship before she got together with Jasmin.
Who are “Ruhse”?
The term “Ruhse” refers to the two actresses who play Anni and Jasmin, Linda Marlen Runge and Janina Uhse. The term was coined by the actresses themselves and happily adopted by the fans.
Are the actresses gay in real life?
Counter question: Does it matter? As long as they play their roles convincingly, this shouldn’t be an issue. But since people won’t stop asking: As far as I know, neither of them has officially come out as lesbian.
Where can I watch the show and/or the Anni & Jasmin storyline online, preferably with English subtitles?
The answer to this question is a little tricky:
The episodes are available online, but as far as I know, access to the videos is geoblocked. Also, RTL is strict when it comes to uploading scenes of the show to YouTube and the like. That’s why, to my knowledge, you can’t find recaps of the storyline on YouTube or any other websites that are accessible to the public because they would eventually be deleted. If you can, RTL has either made an exception or they just haven’t got around to having it deleted yet.
Having said that, if you know anything about fandoms of lesbian soap opera couples, you know that the fans are usually very creative when it comes to finding ways to enable others to become part of the fandom, for example, by sharing videos. I can’t post links to websites where videos are uploaded on this blog, as I don’t want to get into trouble with RTL and I also don’t want to risk ruining it for you international fans by getting those websites blocked or shut down, and I can’t allow people to post such links in the comment section, either. But if you dig a little deeper and check fan websites or communities on, say, Facebook, Tumblr or L Chat, I’m sure that you’re able to find what you’re looking for. 😉
